Shailene Woodley Cast as Janis Joplin in Rock Legend Biopic

After years of attempts to produce a biographical film about Janis Joplin, Shailene Woodley appears to be the star who will finally make it happen. Joplin, one of the most iconic and influential singers of all time, rose to cultural prominence in the late 1960s, earning the title of Rock Queen. 

Tragically, Joplin died in 1970 at the age of 27 due to a heroin overdose, but her legacy endures. Her story has attracted the interest of many of Hollywood's most respected and talented stars, yet has remained unfulfilled until now.

Shailene Woodley Takes the Spotlight

According to Variety, Shailene Woodley will star in and produce the upcoming Janis Joplin biopic. The film has secured a substantial $2.5 million in funding from the California Film Commission. 

It will be shot over a period of 30 days and is expected to spend approximately $10 million on "eligible expenses." Although no director or additional cast members have been announced yet, Woodley is poised to play a significant role in the film's development.

Woodley’s Recent Career Highlights

This psychological drama, which first aired in 2017 and concluded its second season in 2019, is set to return for a third season in 2025. In addition to Woodley, the series stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. Kidman received accolades for her performance in the show, including a win in the same year. 

Big Little Lies, adapted from Liane Moriarty's novel, was created by David E. Kelley, who recently developed the popular Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Notable Past Roles and Upcoming Projects

One of Woodley's most renowned roles was in the 2011 film The Descendants, a comedy-drama also featuring Amara Miller and Nick Krause. 

Woodley gained further recognition for her portrayal of Tris in Divergent and The Divergent Series: Insurgent, where she starred alongside Theo James and Kate Winslet. Additionally, she is known for her performance in The Fault in Our Stars, a teen drama based on John Green’s novel, where she worked with Laura Dern.

In addition to the Janis Joplin biopic, Woodley is set to appear in Killer Heat, a crime thriller rated R, featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Richard Madden. This project further underscores her versatility and continued prominence in the film industry.

As Shailene Woodley takes on the monumental task of bringing Janis Joplin’s story to the screen, anticipation builds around how her portrayal will capture the essence of this legendary figure in rock history.
