Sporting a Rosie the Riveter-inspired red scarf, an orange construction worker crop top, denim shorts, and a tool belt, Perry captures the essence of strong, working women.
Surrounded by her dancers in similar outfits, she playfully chants phrases of female empowerment to the camera, including “Girlboss s---,” “You go girl!” and “You were born to shine!”
“We're kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it. It's very slapstick and very on the nose.”
The Satirical Take on Female Empowerment
Katy Perry delves deeper into the video’s opening scenes, describing how she and her dancers portray a character that seemingly rejects the male gaze while ironically indulging in it. “We're really overplaying it,” she says, highlighting the exaggerated nature of the performance.
This setup culminates in a dramatic scene where Perry's character is “smashed” by a piece of metal, symbolizing a reset of her character’s perception of feminine divinity.
Transition to a New World
The narrative then shifts to a "whole different world," with Perry and her dancers embodying the video's transformative theme.
“We wanted to open this video making it look like a super high-gloss pop star video,” Perry reveals, emphasizing the contrast and satire embedded in the visuals.
The Instagram post, captioned “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! EVEN SATIRE!” encapsulates the video's playful yet powerful message. It's a testament to Perry’s commitment to celebrating women through both earnest and satirical lenses.
"Woman's World" is the lead single from Perry’s forthcoming sixth studio album, "143," set to release on September 20. In a statement on July 10, Perry described the album’s intent:
“I set out to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message.”
