Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh recently opened up about her private life, particularly her marriage to businessman Dickson Poon, in an intimate interview on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast.

The Malaysian actress shared details of their three-year marriage that ended in 1991, a topic she has rarely discussed publicly.

Yeoh, now 61, revealed the personal challenges she faced, including her decision to leave acting to focus on family life and the heartbreaking realization that she could not have children.

Michelle Yeoh’s Decision to Prioritize Family Over Career

At the start of their marriage, Yeoh considered leaving the acting industry entirely. She envisioned a life as a dedicated wife and mother, and thought about stepping away from the career that had brought her fame and success.

"I didn’t know what women in our industry do when they are pregnant, have babies, and return to work," Yeoh confessed during the podcast.

She struggled with the idea of balancing a demanding career in film with family responsibilities. For Yeoh, her commitment to whatever she pursued meant giving it her all.

She admitted that multitasking was not her strength, leading her to the decision to pause her acting career in the hopes of creating a stable family life with Poon.

The Challenges of Maintaining a Marriage in the Spotlight

Yeoh explained that the nature of her work, which often required extensive travel and long periods away from home, made it difficult to maintain a healthy relationship.

This dynamic was not unique to her marriage but is common among couples where both partners have high-demand careers.

"It wasn’t about Dickson or anyone else. Our jobs required constant travel. If you’re filming abroad, you might not see each other for months, and that makes finding balance incredibly difficult," she shared.

Despite her efforts, Yeoh eventually realized that stepping away from her career did not solve the underlying issues in their marriage. She had hoped that by focusing on their life together, she could build a solid foundation, but other challenges arose.

The Pain of Infertility

One of the most heart-wrenching revelations in Yeoh’s interview was her struggle with infertility. She explained that she and Poon wanted children, but despite their efforts, she was unable to conceive.

"I love children. Having kids is one of life’s greatest joys, but unfortunately, it wasn’t physically possible for me," Yeoh said.

The inability to have children strained their relationship even further. Yeoh recounted how Poon had envisioned a large family, particularly to carry on his business legacy. This pressure weighed heavily on Yeoh, and she eventually made the difficult decision to end their marriage.

"At that moment, it was my choice to separate because I knew my ex-husband wanted a big family. He had worked so hard to build his business empire, and he needed children to inherit it," she said.

"I started thinking, ‘What if 10 years from now we still can’t have kids? What will we do then?’ It felt like it would be too late."

Maintaining a Strong Relationship Post-Divorce

Despite the end of their marriage, Yeoh and Poon remained on good terms. They managed to maintain a close friendship, and Yeoh even developed a strong bond with Poon’s eldest daughter, who became her godchild.

In an unexpected twist, Yeoh also became close friends with Poon’s ex-wife, Marjorie Yang, often spending vacations together.

"I’m thankful that all my friends trust me with their children, and now I have six godchildren," Yeoh said with a laugh during the podcast.

A New Chapter with Jean Todt

After her marriage to Poon ended, Yeoh found love again with Jean Todt, an automotive executive. The couple got engaged in 2004 and were married in July 2023 after a 19-year engagement.

Yeoh’s relationship with Todt is a testament to her resilience and her ability to move forward despite the emotional scars from her previous marriage.

Michelle Yeoh’s candid discussion about her marriage to Dickson Poon and her struggle with infertility has resonated with many, as it highlights the difficult decisions women face when trying to balance their personal and professional lives.

Yeoh’s story is one of strength and self-awareness, as she chose to prioritize her well-being and accept the limitations of her circumstances. Now happily married to Jean Todt and with a close-knit circle of friends and godchildren, Yeoh continues to inspire both on and off the screen.
