Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom: The Real Reason Behind Their 2017 Breakup and How They Found Their Way Back Together
Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have been one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples for years. Despite their seemingly perfect relationship, they briefly separated in 2017.
However, their love story took a turn a year later, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. In a revealing interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Katy Perry opened up about the reasons behind their breakup and what ultimately brought them back together.
A Relationship Interrupted: The 2017 Breakup
During her interview, Katy Perry shared that the main reason for their 2017 split was a difference in priorities and life goals.
Reflecting on the early stages of their relationship, which began after a chance encounter over a burger at the 2016 Golden Globes, Perry revealed that they were not fully committed at the time.
“We weren’t really that serious about the relationship then,” Perry said, looking back at their early days. Orlando Bloom had just come out of a period of celibacy, which gave him a lot of time for self-reflection.
“He was in a specific place at the time,” she said, “and had many personal desires and goals to pursue.” On the other hand, Perry had just ended a significant relationship and felt uncertain about moving forward.
“I needed to take time for myself, especially with all the work commitments I had lined up,” she explained.
The Hoffman Institute Retreat: A Turning Point for Bloom
A major shift occurred for Orlando Bloom during a week-long retreat at the Hoffman Institute in California, which Perry credits for transforming his perspective.
According to Perry, this retreat helped Bloom confront and overcome some of his negative habits and “rewire” his thinking through physical and emotional activities.
“There were no drugs or plant medicine involved,” Perry clarified. “It was purely science-backed therapies and exercises designed to help him calm his impostor syndrome and awaken his true self.”
Bloom's newfound clarity after the retreat marked a pivotal change in their relationship. “Once he completed the program, he stopped playing emotional games with me,” Perry recalled.
This shift was crucial, as she had grown tired of the emotional push-and-pull that had defined their relationship up until that point. “I was enjoying the back-and-forth at first, but eventually, it wore me out,” she admitted.
Reconnecting After the Split
Despite their differences, Perry and Bloom rekindled their relationship a year after their 2017 breakup. Perry acknowledged that during their separation, she went through one of the most challenging years of her life.
The disappointment surrounding her 2017 album Witness, which didn’t meet commercial expectations, further fueled her frustrations. “I thought I loved myself, but in reality, I was still seeking validation from others,” Perry confessed.
It wasn’t until Perry attended the Hoffman Institute herself at the end of 2017 that she started to see things differently. She shared that the retreat helped her reshape her relationship with her mind, body, and heart. This transformation brought her back to Bloom.
“I was performing near the location where Orlando was vacationing, and I told him, ‘I’m coming by!’” Perry said. Despite being in a bad mental space, she had promised herself that she would undergo the Hoffman Process to find balance.
Orlando Bloom’s Role as a Support System
As their relationship progressed, Perry reflected on how Bloom became her anchor during difficult times. “We all have the power to grow, and one of Orlando’s strengths is his ability to step in and support me when I’m falling apart,” she said.
“Normally, I’m the alpha in the relationship, tough and independent. I’ve always thought, ‘I can handle anything, I don’t need help,’ but deep down, I did need help. I needed a partner.”
Bloom’s presence and support played a critical role in Perry’s personal growth, showing her the importance of having a strong, reliable partner by her side.
Moving Forward: From Engagement to Parenthood
Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were first spotted together again in February 2018, a year after their breakup. By September 2018, they made their official debut as a couple on the red carpet. Things moved quickly after that, with the couple announcing their engagement in February 2019.
A month after getting engaged, Perry and Bloom began living together, marking the next chapter of their relationship. Then, in March 2020, the couple revealed that they were expecting their first child together.
On August 27, 2020, they welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, into the world. Daisy is Bloom’s second child, as he shares a son with his ex-wife, Miranda Kerr, from their marriage between 2010 and 2013.
