Matthew Macfadyen has openly discussed his true feelings about starring in the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice. Despite the film's enduring popularity and his iconic role as Mr. Darcy, Macfadyen admitted that his experience on set wasn't entirely enjoyable.

In an interview on CBS Mornings, Macfadyen revealed, "No, not really." He elaborated, "I feel bad saying that. There were moments of fun, but I wish I had enjoyed it more. I wish I hadn't been so anxious."

Macfadyen, who starred alongside Keira Knightley as Mr. Darcy, felt he wasn't suited for the role. He described himself as "not handsome enough" to portray the character and admitted to feeling like he was a "wrong choice" for the part. Despite these doubts, he acknowledged that the role ended up working well.

As Pride & Prejudice approaches its 20th anniversary next year, Macfadyen has accepted that the character of Mr. Darcy remains a significant part of his public image. He humorously remarked, "I don’t think I’ve aged too badly," in response to fans still recognizing him as Mr. Darcy.

The film, adapted from Jane Austen's 1813 novel, continues to be a beloved classic. It explores the complexities of marriage and social class through the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The novel was previously adapted into a 1995 television series starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth.

Despite Macfadyen’s mixed feelings about his role, Pride & Prejudice remains a cherished film, showcasing his contribution to one of the most memorable literary adaptations of the early 2000s.
