Love stories that blossom on set often captivate not just the actors involved, but also those who witness these relationships unfold in real time. This was precisely the case for Marisa Tomei, the actress who played Aunt May in the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man series.

Since joining the project in 2017, Tomei has been a firsthand witness to the growing romance between the franchise's leading stars, Tom Holland and Zendaya. This love story, it turns out, became one of the most memorable aspects of her experience working on the Spider-Man films.

In a recent interview at Fan Expo 2024 in Toronto, Canada, Tomei shared her reflections on working with the young actors, revealing that their journey from co-stars to a real-life couple left a significant impression on her.

"I think some of my favorite memories from Spider-Man are watching Tom and Zendaya grow up and fall in love and seeing both of them blossom into phenomenal talents," she said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Tomei admitted that she was mesmerized from the start, saying, "I was just so awestruck by them, truly awestruck."

Tom Holland and Zendaya have since earned recognition as complete actors, praised not only for their on-screen chemistry but also for their diverse range of talents.

Tomei, an Oscar-winning actress herself, was full of admiration for the young stars, stating, "They have such huge star power, an immense star power, and they've managed to stay grounded at the same time. They're multi-talented."

Indeed, Holland and Zendaya have proven themselves to be more than just actors. They are multi-faceted artists, capable of singing, dancing, acting, performing stunts, and even designing fashion.

"They can do everything! They sing, they dance, they act, they do action scenes, they design clothes. I mean, what can't they do? They're truly remarkable and incredible people," Tomei added.

The trio's journey began with Spider-Man: Homecoming and continued through to the latest installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The franchise has been immensely successful, grossing over USD 1.5 billion.

When the first film was released, Tom Holland was just 21 years old, with Zendaya being one year younger. Tomei's portrayal of Aunt May also garnered attention, as she brought a younger, more modern version of the character to life.

In a 2017 interview, Tomei discussed her approach to playing Aunt May, revealing that she wanted to bring her own vision to the character.

"Peter Parker is 15 years old in this movie. So I asked my brother, Adam, who's been a Marvel fan since we were kids. He explained that May is Peter's aunt by marriage. So May could be either older or younger, depending on when she met her husband," Tomei explained.

"I then decided that maybe May's husband was her professor. So, I created a character who is sexy and a bit 'naughty.' But of course, that wasn't in the film. 'Young and sexy Aunt May' wasn't the description of my character. So I infused some of my personality into it," she continued.

However, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Aunt May's journey came to an emotional end as the character was tragically killed by Green Goblin played by Willem Dafoe. This twist left Tomei feeling uncertain about her character's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Tomei's reflections offer a glimpse into the personal and professional experiences of working on such a high-profile franchise. Her observations about Holland and Zendaya not only highlight their exceptional talents but also their ability to maintain authenticity and humility amid their rising stardom.

As fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Spider-Man saga, Tomei’s insights add a layer of depth to the story behind the scenes, reminding us that sometimes, the real magic happens off-camera.
