In an unexpected twist, writers of the highly anticipated Deadpool 3 and Wolverine films, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, have unveiled details about a scrapped cameo that could have reshaped the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Initially planned to feature Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, alongside Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan, the cameo ultimately never made it to the final cut, leaving fans curious about what might have been.

The Original Plan: Tony Stark’s Return

Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the creative minds behind the latest installment of the Deadpool franchise, revealed in a recent interview with IndieWire that they initially planned for Tony Stark, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., to make a brief appearance in Deadpool 3.

This scene was to be a fan-favorite moment, where Tony Stark and Happy Hogan were set to interact with Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson, known as Deadpool.

"We wanted Robert Downey Jr. to have a brief role," Wernick explained. "The scene was written from the start with both Happy and Downey in mind."

Rhett Reese added, "Ryan Reynolds himself wrote the scene with both of them, hoping we could secure Downey. He also pushed for Favreau, as they are an iconic duo and would have been perfect for the scene."

Why the Cameo Was Dropped

However, this exciting prospect was dropped when the writing team learned of Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU in a different capacity.

Downey was already committed to reprising his role, not as Iron Man, but as the notorious villain Doctor Doom. This revelation created a conflict, as it would have been impossible for Downey to appear in both roles within the same cinematic universe.

"Behind the scenes, we were unaware of Doctor Doom, and there was no way he could play both roles," Wernick admitted. "We then joked, 'Did Downey really say no to Ryan Reynolds? Nobody says no to Ryan Reynolds!'"

A Glimpse into the Scrapped Scene

Wernick and Reese shared more about what the scene with Robert Downey Jr. could have looked like. In the original draft, Deadpool was to meet Happy Hogan and express his desire to join the Avengers. Happy, however, would have rejected Wade's offer.

"That scene, with Downey included, is essentially what you would have seen on screen," Reese explained. "Tony Stark was supposed to be in the room alongside Wade and Happy. Stark, like Happy, would have turned down Wade's request to join the Avengers."

Wernick elaborated that the initial script even involved a more extensive Avengers cameo, where Wade Wilson faced the entire superhero team.

"There was an early version, never written but imagined, that had all the Avengers in one room," Wernick said. "Wade gets rejected and then proceeds to defeat all the Avengers in a way only Deadpool could."

The Surprising Cameos That Made the Cut

Despite the absence of Tony Stark, Deadpool 3 still promises a plethora of surprising cameos that will leave audiences thrilled.

Among the most talked-about appearances are Henry Cavill as Cavill-rine, Dafne Keen reprising her role as X-23, Jennifer Garner returning as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Chris Evans donning the iconic Human Torch persona as Johnny Storm.

These cameos highlight the film's dedication to fan service, bringing back beloved characters and introducing exciting new ones into the MCU fold.

Looking Ahead: What This Means for the MCU

The inclusion of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom signals Marvel's intent to continue evolving its universe, taking bold risks with casting and storyline decisions.

Downey's transition from beloved superhero to a formidable villain could redefine the MCU's dynamic, offering fresh narratives and unexpected character arcs.

As the MCU continues to expand, introducing new characters while revisiting fan favorites, Deadpool 3 stands as a testament to Marvel's ability to balance humor, action, and surprise cameos.

Even without Tony Stark, the film is poised to deliver a unique and memorable experience that will keep audiences talking long after the credits roll.
